CHICAGO - UIC women's cross country runner Kristen Heckert and volleyball player Casie Sullivan have been named to the Horizon League's Academic All-League Teams for the fall, the conference announced today.
Heckert, a senior, carries a 3.54 grade point average and is majoring in math education. She is one of seven athletes chosen for the women's cross country all-league team this year.
The Kaneland, Ill. native finished 18th overall at the Horizon League Championships to lead the Flames to a fifth-place finish. In addition, Heckert was named the Horizon League Cross Country Runner of the Week twice during the season. She also won the 5K race at Illinois Intercollegiates in a personal-best 17:37.
Sullivan is majoring in movement science and has a 3.51 GPA. The junior is one of five volleyball student-athletes to be chosen for both the All-Horizon League Team and the Academic All-League Team.
Sullivan was the Flames' leading hitter this season with 195 total kills and 3.15 kills per game. The Kewannee, Ill. native was one of UIC's best defenders with 349 digs (2.73 dpg). She also helped lead the Flames reach the Horizon League semifinals for the first time since 2006.
To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher and have completed at least one school year at the member institution. A total of 50 student-athletes from the five fall sports were chosen from among more than 153 nominations.
