CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The UIC women's tennis team played right along with Big 12 opponent Kansas, the 75th-ranked team in the nation in Champaign on Saturday afternoon, but were unable to pull out the victory, falling to the Jayhawks, 4-3.
Playing without Elena Antakova due to illness, the Flames played strong doubles, with Kristen McPhillips and Mariya Kovaleva easily taking down KU's top doubles duo of Horvath and Dorn, 8-1.
With UIC falling at the No. 2 position, doubles came down to former Lyons Township partners Amy Jellish and Jenna Reisch teaming up for a 9-8 (7-5) point clinching win over Martinez and Wilbert to put the Flames ahead, 1-0.
Freshman Kovaleva continues to have an outstanding season, as she won her singles match over KU's Horvath 6-1, 6-2 at the second position. McPhillips also came out victorious against Dorn, taking 6-4, 6-4 third singles win.
Unfortunately for the Flames, no one else in the lineup was able to snag a set from the Jayhawks, with the match ultimately going in KU's favor.
The Flames are back in action in Champaign tomorrow as they face sister school Illinois at 10 a.m.
