March 20, 2009

Box Score

CHICAGO- Adam Worthington struck out 10 in his first career complete game, and the UIC baseball team scored all eight of its runs during the first four innings to defeat Cleveland State, 8-2, in the two teams' Horizon League opener at Les Miller Field on Friday.

Steve McGuiggan and Jake Carr each drove in a pair of runs for the Flames (4-12, 1-0 Horizon League).

Worthington, making just his fourth career start after coming out of the bullpen the last three seasons, allowed just one earned run and two runs total on seven scattered hits. He sat down a career-high 10 batters without issuing a walk.

UIC broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the bottom of the third. After McGuiggan's go-ahead RBI single, Carr hit a two-run double into the gap in right center.

The Flames tacked on four in the fourth. Ty Rubio hit an RBI double, Nathan Orf followed with an RBI single and Rubio scored one batter later on a throwing error during a failed rundown attempt. McGuiggan followed with an RBI groundout that capped UIC's scoring.

Kyle Shaffer went 2-for-4 for the Vikings (3-11, 0-1 Horizon League).

The two teams conclude their series at Les Miller Field on Saturday, March 21 with a doubleheader at 12:05 p.m.
