CHICAGO- A pair of three-run innings and eight quality frames tossed by starter Chris Kovacevich helped the UIC baseball team defeat Youngstown State, 6-1, to complete a doubleheader sweep at Les Miller Field on Friday.
Tony Altavilla went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI for the Flames (9-13, 5-0 Horizon League), who won for the eighth time in the last 10 games.
Kovacevich was stellar, striking out seven batters while allowing just one run in eight innings of work.
The Flames scored three times with two outs in the third. Steve McGuiggan, Andy Leonard and Jason Ganek hit back-to-back-to-back RBI hits.
Youngstown State (4-19, 1-4 Horizon League) tallied a run in the top of the fifth, but UIC responded with three more runs in the bottom half of that same frame. All three of those runs came by way of two-out damage, with John Rosinski, Altavilla and Steven Humble bringing runners home with hits.
The southpaw duo of Kovacevich and Michael Heesch did the rest on the mound, keeping the Penguins off of the scoreboard the rest of the way.
UIC concludes its three-game series against the Penguins with a single contest at Les Miller Field on Saturday, Mar. 28 at a new start time of 11:30 a.m.
