CHICAGO- The UIC volleyball team released its 2009 schedule on Friday, June 19, with the Flames poised and prepared to enter the inaugural season of Katie Schumacher-Cawley's tenure as head coach.

"Our non-conference tournaments will be an excellent test in preparing us for the Horizon League," said Schumacher-Cawley. "We accomplished a lot during the spring season, and we are excited about raising the bar of excellence this upcoming season."

The Flames will open the season at the Northern Illinois Invitational in DeKalb, where they will face the likes of Stephen F. Austin, Western Illinois, Southern Illinois and the Huskies on August 28 and 29.

The following weekend takes the team to the IU adidas Classic in Bloomington, Ind. on Sept. 4 and 5, with the field including Murray State, Tennessee-Martin as well as the host Hoosiers.

After a midweek matchup at Eastern Illinois on Sept. 8, UIC opens up play at the Flames Athletic Center with the UIC Invitational on Friday, Sept. 11, kicking off the home slate with a 7 p.m. match with Georgia State. Saturday's action includes a meeting with Duquense at 10 a.m., followed by a 7:00 p.m. contest against Big Ten foe Michigan State.

The Flames remain at home for a three-match stretch following the UIC Invitational with a Sept. 15 visit from Central Michigan before delving into league play against defending champion Milwaukee on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 4 p.m. before hosting Green Bay on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 2 p.m.

September will be closed out on the road for the Flames as they will head to Youngstown State on the 26th and step out of league play for a Sunday contest at Robert Morris in Pittsburgh, Pa. on the 27th.

UIC remains on the road to open up the month of October, heading back to Ohio for matches at Cleveland State on Friday, Oct. 2 and Wright State the following day.

Three days later, the Flames return to action in the city of Chicago, heading to Rogers Park for a mid-week matchup against Loyola on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. UIC closes out the week at the FAC, hosting Butler on Oct. 10 and Valparaiso on Oct. 11 in a pair of 4 p.m. contests.

A weekend stint in Wisconsin takes the Flames to Milwaukee on Friday, Oct. 16, immediately followed by a trip up to Green Bay on Saturday, Oct. 17.

The Flames close out the month of October in Chicago, hosting Chicago State on the 20th at 5 p.m., followed by a weekend match with Youngstown State on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. A midweek visit to DePaul on Tuesday, Oct. 24 will be a precursor to the weekend's league matches back at home, starting with Wright State on Friday the 30th at 7 p.m., and a Halloween contest against Cleveland State at 4 p.m.

November takes the Flames on the road to Valparaiso on the 6th, immediately followed by a trip to meet the Bulldogs of Butler in Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon.

UIC will then wrap things up at home as Western Illinois visits the FAC on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m., and Loyola will come in to close out the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 2 p.m.

The Flames head to the 2009 Horizon League championship, held on November 19-22 at a site to be determined.

Schumacher-Cawley, who was appointed the Flames' head coach this past December, sees a motivated UIC squad that is ready to play.

"This team is hungry to compete and eager to prove what they can do," said Schumacher-Cawley.
