AURORA, Ill.- The UIC women's tennis team opened its fall season at the Northern Illinois Invitational Friday and Saturday.
Members of the Flames took home top honors in five of the seven flights at the invitational.
Mariya Kovaleva took the Flight A singles title for the Flames, besting her teammate, Ilinca Cristescu, 6-4, 6-2 for the title. UIC freshman Zlatka Petrova took the Flight B singles crown, defeating teammate Kristen McPhillips 6-0,0-6, 10-2 in the final match.
Flight C again saw a pair of Flames in the final match, with Elena Antakova taking the win against Amy Jellish, 6-3, 6-1. Jenna Reisch was the winner of the consolation side of the Flight D singles bracket, besting her Eastern Illinois opponent 6-4, 6-0 in her final match.
Flight A Doubles saw a pair of UIC teams taking both the title and consolation title. Kovaleva and McPhillips defeated NIU's Fausett and Rogers 8-1 to win the bracket, while Cristescu and Antakova won 8-2 in their final match against Green Bay's Lawent and Grimando to take the consolation half of the bracket.
Petrova and Reisch also went undefeated in their Flight B Doubles bracket, winning 9-8 against Dibbs and Egan from Eastern Illinois for the title.
UIC continues its fall slate Sept. 25-27, hosting the UIC Invitational at the UIC Outdoor Courts.
