LAS VEGAS- Offense awakened for the UIC men's soccer team on Sunday, as the Flames posted a season-high goal output in a 3-0 victory over UC Riverside at the UNLV Rebel Classic.
After tallying three total goals in their first five matches, the Flames (1-2-3) needed just 69 minutes against the Highlanders (1-5-0) to match that scoring production en route to their first win of the year.
"A good result," said UIC head coach John Trask. "It was nice to get the first win. It could have been a tricky little game. A 10:30 a.m. game in 95-degree heat after a tough overtime game on Friday, but the guys battled through it."
Charlie Trout uncorked a beautiful free kick from 25 yards away that zipped past UCR keeper Ryan Schmitz in the 26th minute to put the Flames in front.
In the 56th minute it was freshman Ivan Stanisavljevic who made a spectacular run past multiple Highlander defenders in the box and unleashed a blast for UIC's second goal and his first collegiate tally.
Just 13 minutes later the Flames cemented the victory when Kevin Stoll's cross found Ian Sarachan, who capped the scoring with a shot from the left side that was shipped far right post and into the net.
"A tremendous free-kick goal by Charlie and a wonderful effort by Ivan," said Trask. "It was very nice to see one of our senior captains score with Ian's goal."
Jovan Bubonja and the UIC defense recorded their second clean sheet of the season.
"Compliments to Phillip Mitchell and Stevan Jovcic for their play," said Trask. "Two guys who haven't been getting a lot of minutes of late but really stepped up and turned in nice performances today.
"Nice to see Bart Boguszewski and Nate Downing get significant minutes as well," Trask said. "They earned the time for their hard work."
The Flames open Horizon League play at Cleveland State next Sunday, Sept. 27.
