CHICAGO- The Flames volleyball squad opens the road portion of its Horizon League schedule Saturday at Youngstown State. UIC will then step out of conference play for a Sunday match at Robert Morris.

"We are looking forward to competition against Youngstown," Flames' head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley said. "They are a well coached team that has great senior leadership. We have to be ready to play.

"We've never competed at Robert Morris, but they've had a very competitive preseason. We are looking forward to visiting a new place."

UIC (6-8) matches up with the Penguins at 1 p.m. from the Beeghly Center on the campus of YSU. The Robert Morris match will also start at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The Flames are currently sitting atop the Horizon League standings with a 2-0 record on the young season. UIC is coming off of a 2-0 weekend, posting wins against Milwaukee and Green Bay at the Flames Athletic Center.

Freshman Kelsey Safranek had the hot hand on the weekend, racking up 27 kills in the two UIC wins, including a career-high 17-kill output against Green Bay Sunday. Junior Epiphany Davis had 17 blocks, earning herself the Horizon League's Defensive Player of the Week honors.

The Youngstown State match is the first of five consecutive UIC will play away from the Flames Athletic Center. The Flames are 0-3 in road matches so far in 2009.
