YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio- The Flames volleyball team dropped its first Horizon League match of the 2009 season, fighting through a five set, 3-2 (19-25, 25-16, 19-25, 25-21, 15-11) loss at Youngstown State Saturday afternoon.
"It was an exciting match," UIC head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley said. "We played well for points. When we had the opportunity to score and finish the game but we just couldn't seem to do it."
The host Penguins (4-10, 2-2) jumped out to an early lead in set one, taking an 8-2 advantage, but the Flames (6-9, 2-1) pushed back to take a 14-11 lead of their own. Youngstown State would never lead again, as UIC took the 25-19 victory.
YSU came back in set two, never allowing the Flames to lead. The Penguins took a 25-16 win to knot the match at a set apiece.
It was the Flames' turn to take command in set three, with UIC jumping out to 13-9 lead early and not looking back. UIC took set three 25-19.
Set four saw the Penguins re-take control, posting a 25-21 win. The Flames tied the score 17-17, but never had the lead in the set.
The rubber game of the match also played out in Youngstown State's favor, with the Penguins earning the match win with a 15-11 victory.
Casie Sullivan's 15 kills led UIC, while Lana Lobdell and Nicole Allgood each had 11 kills in the match. Epiphany Davis added 10 kills and three blocks, while Jessica Dalke dished out 47 assists and had a team-high 12 digs for the Flames.
"I thought Epiphany and Casie had a good match," Schumacher-Cawley said. "But we have to be able to be on the same page. Youngstown State came out and played well. They didn't give up. We've got to learn from this and improve."
UIC takes a break from the Horizon League schedule to play at Robert Morris Sunday afternoon. The Flames step back into League play Oct. 2 and Oct. 3 with matches at Cleveland State and Wright State.
