PEORIA, Ill. - The UIC men's and women's cross country teams headed downstate on Friday afternoon to run in the seventh annual Bradley Classic at Newman Golf Course in Peoria.

Head coach Jim Knoedel's men's team place 11th overall in the field of 21 teams, while the women's team ran 16th in a field of 20.

For the men, junior Brian Denk continued his fantastic fall as the top finisher for the Flames. The junior finished 11th overall in a time of 24:32. Sam Kehoe was next to cross the finish line for UIC, running the race in 24:57. Kehoe was followed by Tyler Hinckley (52nd) and Arash Darbandi (74th).

Denk and Kehoe teamed up to become the first pair of teammates to turn in sub-25-minute efforts in a race.

"I was very excited with the top four runners as they all turned in career bests against some of the strongest teams in the midwest," said Knoedel.

DePaul's Matthew Graham was the men's individual champion after running the course in 23:37. The Big Ten's Iowa Hawkeyes placed three runners in the top five to claim the men's team crown.

Jaime Johnson ran the race 23:12 for the women, becoming the top female finisher for the Flames for the second consecutive race. Johnson's placed 68th overall. Rosemary Gillam ran right with Johnson almost the whole way, crossing the line in 23:19 and finishing 77th for UIC.

"Our women really stepped up with an aggressive effort today as the top five all had season bests," said Knoedel. "Jaime Johnson and Rosie Gillam have provided strong leadership and will be the force that can lead us to a finish in the top half at the Horizon League Meet."

Milwaukee's Elise Sigg won the women's race in 21:05, while the Iowa State Cyclones captured the women's team title.

The Flames will be idle until Oct. 30 when they will run at the Horizon League Championships at Montrose Beach in Chicago.

"We are looking forward to the conference meet in two weeks. We will have several formidable opponents in Butler and Loyola, but we hope we can rise to the occasion," said Knoedel.
