CHICAGO - The UIC men's and women's cross country teams were back in action for the first time since Sept. 17th on Saturday facing several Horizon League foes at the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational hosted by Loyola at Montrose Beach. The men's team finished 12th out of 41 collegiate entries, while the women's squad placed 25th.
Brian Denk continued an excellent fall with a phenomenal second-place finish over the 8K course in a time of 24:53. DePaul's Matthew Graham won the event in a blistering time of 24:32.
UIC head coach Jim Knoedel was exceedingly proud of his top male performer after the race.
"Brian ran an incredible race," said Knoedel. "He far surpassed what anyone thought he could do and in extremely windy conditions, he turned in a career personal-best."
As far as the men's team's 12th-place finish, Knoedel was disappointed with Saturday's outcome.
"Our men didn't respond to the competition today," said Knoedel. "I know we are a much better team than results showed."
Tyler Hinckley (25:54) and Sam Kehoe (26:02) worked together to place 35th and 54th, respectively, in the 528-runner field.
On the women's side, Knoedel was please with the continued progress the team has shown in 2010. Jaime Johnson was the top finisher for the Flames with a time of 19:03 in the 5K event.
"Jaime had her best race and demonstrated how her work ethic and attitude pays off," said Knoedel, who coaches both teams. "We saw improvements by all our women and we will continue to work as hard as we have over the past two weeks."
Rosie Gillam posted a time of 19:24, while Mary Kate Carrick ran the course in 19:43. UIC will return to run on Friday, Oct. 15 at the Bradley Classic in downstate Peoria, Ill. The action begins at 4:15 p.m.
