KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The UIC women's tennis squad closed out the fall portion of their 2010-11 schedule with more solid results at the Second Chance Tournament, hosted by Western Michigan this weekend.

Two-time defending Horizon League Player of the Year Mariya Kovaleva claimed the Gold Bracket singles championship with ease, besting all opponents in straight sets before her victory over Dian Mayasari of Chicago State, 6-4, 6-2.

Elisa Simonetti also fared well in the gold bracket, defeating Miami University's Gillian Hush and top-seeded Christine Chiricosta of Bowling Green before falling to Mayasari in the semifinals.

The Flames dominated the Black bracket of singles play, as both Ilinca Cristescu and Teona Tsertsvadze moved through the bracket with ease, facing one another in the finals. Cristescu bested the newcomer Tsertsvadze in a close tiebreaker, emerging triumphant in a 1-6, 6-2, 10-7 final.

In doubles play, Cristescu and Tsertsvadze teamed up to advance to the quarterfinals. Kovaleva and Simonetti, after falling to the eventual champions, regained their composure and won out the consolation bracket with an 8-4 win over a duo from Miami University.

UIC will return to action in January, where they will begin their quest of a 15th consecutive conference crown in the 2011 season.
