CHICAGO - Janise Dismuke, a redshirt sophomore on the UIC volleyball team has been named to the COBRA Magazine All-Midwest Region Team.
Dismuke blossomed into a key contributor for the Flames in 2010. The Peoria, Ill native led the Horizon League in hitting percentage with a mark of .321 (267-80-582) and she ranked 10th in the conference in blocks with 0.94 per set (105 total). Dismuke accounted for 331.5 points this past season, second-most on the team.
"Janise has worked very hard and has improved her skills," said UIC head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley. "It's wonderful that she's recognized for her hard work and I look forward to seeing what she will do next season."
Dismuke had an especially memorable weekend earlier this season as she helped lead the Flames to a Best Western Invitational championship in Jacksonville, Fla. Dismuke was named the tournament's most valuable player after leading UIC with 52 kills and 17 blocks in four matches. She hit an astounding .484, committing just six errors in 95 total attempts on offense. Dismuke averaged 3.47 kills per set and amassed at least 11 kills in every match of the tournament, the only Flame to do so. She was also named Horizon League Player of the Week following the effort and was selected as the Horizon League Network's People Choice Award winner.
Two other Horizon League players were also named to the squad. Wright State's Shaunda Sandifer and Butler's Maureen Bamiro were also chosen for the honor.
COBRA Magazine (www.cobramag.t83.net) is the first publication that showcases the talents of African-American volleyball players. The magazine released an All-National Team for the first time in 2009 and an All-Region Team for the first time this season.
COBRA's goal is to tell inspiring stories of African-American volleyball players that show young players that they too have opportunities to thrive in the sport despite cultural differences and economic disadvantages.
