CHICAGO - The UIC women's basketball team returned to the UIC Pavilion on Thursday night and knocked off the Wright State Raiders, 67-62. The Flames completed the season sweep against the Raiders.
UIC (11-12, 8-4 Horizon League) saw a second-half lead shrink to two points with 5:17 to play when Wright State (8-14, 4-8 Horizon League) got a lay-up from Erica Richardson. The Flames went on a 7-0 run capped by Cassie Johnson's lay-up with 2:55 to play.
The Flames came out hot, shooting 64 percent (16-for-25) in the game's opening stanza and building up a ten-point advantage at the break, 34-24.
Still, UIC head coach Lisa Ryckbosch was not thrilled with her team's offensive effort on Thursday.
"The turnovers killed us," said Ryckbosch after the game. "I thought we did some good things in the first half, but I don't understand how we came out as flat as we did in the second half. We dug ourselves a big fat hole."
UIC turned the ball over 18 times in the game.
The Flames were led in scoring by senior Jessie Miller who poured in at least 20 points for the sixth time this season. The Burnsville, Minn. native also added six rebounds.
Briana Hinkle continued to provide a spark of the bench for UIC, scoring 14 points, including 10 in the first half. Hinkle has come off the bench in UIC's last three games after freshman Taylor Foulks was inserted in the starting lineup at Loyola on Jan. 30th.
"She's definitely one of these people that will do anything the team needs and do so willingly," said Ryckbosch about Hinkle's new role. "It's been a real positive for us."
Wright State was led by LaShawna Thomas who scored a career-high 25 points in the loss. Richardson also added 14 for the Raiders.
UIC will be right back at the Pavilion on Saturday afternoon when they welcome the Detroit Titans at 3:00 p.m. The game will mark the team's third annual WBCA Pink Zone game and all fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game in support of breast cancer awareness.
