YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The UIC softball team extended its winning streak to a season-best six games by virtue of a doubleheader sweep of Youngstown State on Saturday afternoon.
"It's great to see all parts of our game working," said head coach Michelle Venturella. "The entire lineup has really been solid offensively with different people stepping up every game.
"With the offense doing their thing, our pitching staff relaxes and it takes pressure off of the defense. It's great to have some consistency in our games." The Flames (16-29, 9-6 Horizon) will close out the series against the Penguins on Sunday at a new scheduled time of 11 a.m.
GAME ONE: UIC 8, Youngstown State 0 (Five Innings)
UIC would open the contest with three unearned runs in the first two innings as the Flames capitalized on YSU's defensive struggles that totaled seven errors in the opening game.
A three-run third inning would open things up for the visitors as three hits, including a double from Brooke Frydendall, a walk and a pair of errors would give the Flames a 6-0 lead.
The Penguins would struggle on offense, moving only six into scoring position with only a lone runner moving to third. Devin Miller would claim her sixth win of the season, letting up a mere four hits while walking three and fanning four.
Frydendall would drive in the game's final two runs with two outs in the fifth off a single to center field, bringing Claire Donayanavard and Christie Seddon in who had reached base off a walk and an infield error, respectively.
GAME TWO: UIC 11, Youngstown State 1 (Five Innings)
YSU would strike first in the nightcap as third baseman Vicky Rumph knocked a two-out solo homer over the left field wall of McCune Park.
But a three-run Flames' second inning took away any momentum from the host Penguins, as four hits and an RBI walk by Stephanie Chavez put UIC ahead for good, 3-1.
The Penguins would get a lone hit off starting pitcher Ashley Hewett, who would walk a pair and strike out five in her ninth win of the season.
With nothing-doing in the third, UIC piled on five singles intermingled with an error and a walk to chase starting pitcher Hana Somogyi for five more runs to go up by seven.
Frydendall would close out her day with five RBI, striking again in the fifth inning with a left field double, driving home Macias and Chavez to achieve the run-rule limit once again to cap the contest at five innings.
