AVON, Ohio- A pair of four-run innings set the stage for the UIC baseball team's decisive 14-3 win over host Cleveland State at All Pro Freight Stadium on Friday.
Michael Heesch allowed just three runs in seven quality innings to earn his fifth victory of the year, while Steve McGuiggan went 3-for-4 with four RBI in the leadoff spot for the Flames (15-22, 9-6 Horizon League).
Tyler Wynn went 3-for-4 and Kyle Shaffer homered for the Vikings (9-31, 2-11 Horizon League).
UIC trailed 2-1 after one when the Flames rallied with a four-run second. McGuiggan's two-run double to left plated the tying and go-ahead tallies and began the big inning, which ended on Nathan Orf's RBI fielder's choice and a wild pitch that allowed McGuiggan to score.
The Flames duplicated the four-run feat in the fourth. It was McGuiggan doing more damage, this time on an RBI triple. Jason Ganek's subsequent RBI double and an error on shortstop Jason Haditsch that allowed a pair to cross the plate capped the frame.
UIC tacked on three more in the fifth, thanks to McGuiggan's run-scoring squeeze bunt, another Viking error that gave Andy Leonard time to move from second to home and an RBI double off the bat of Orf.
Two runs were added to the Flames' total in the seventh when Ryan Meehan and Matt Serna connected on RBI hits.
Heesch scattered 10 hits but allowed no free passes before exiting prior to the eighth, giving way to relief from Mike Schoolcraft and Ganek.
UIC and Cleveland State wrap up their three-game series with a doubleheader at All Pro Freight Stadium on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. Central. Both games will be streamed live on the Horizon League Network.
