CHICAGO - The UIC volleyball team released the 2010 schedule today as the Flames enter the second season under the guidance of head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley.
"Our non-conference schedule is exciting and competitive," said Schumacher-Cawley. "It will serve as great preparation for Horizon League play."
The Flames open the season just up the road from campus when they head to Lincoln Park for the Chicagoland Challenge hosted by DePaul on Friday, Aug. 27 at 7:30 p.m. The Flames and Blue Demons will square off opening night with the championship match the following evening at the same time.
The home schedule opens the following weekend when Kennesaw State, Memphis and Northern Illinois invade the Flames Athletic Center for the UIC Invitational on Sept. 3 and 4.
The first true road trip of the season sends UIC to Jacksonville, Fla. on Sept. 10 and 11 when they will participate in the UNF Tournament, hosted by North Florida. The Flames will also compete with Charleston Southern, University of Tennessee - Chattanooga and Troy at the event.
Horizon League matches will get underway the following weekend on Sept. 17 and 18 when Youngstown State and Cleveland State come to Chicago.
The Flames host their first midweek match of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 21 when they play against Evansville at 7:00 p.m.
The next six matches are all of the conference variety with home dates against Valparaiso on Sept. 24, Loyola on Sept. 25, Milwaukee on Oct. 5 and Green Bay the following afternoon on Oct. 6 sandwiched around a road trip to Wright State and Butler on Oct. 1 and 2.
That stretch is followed by non-conference tilts at Saint Louis on Oct. 9 and versus Eastern Illinois at home on Oct. 11 at 7:00 p.m.
UIC will close out the season with eight of their final 10 matches away from the Flames Athletic Center. Schumacher-Cawley's bunch will travel to Cleveland State and Youngstown State on Oct. 15 and 16 and Loyola and Valparaiso on Oct. 22, then 23.
The Flames will be back home for one last weekend at the FAC when they welcome Butler on Oct. 29 and Wright State on Oct. 30 to close out the home schedule.
As the calendar turns to November, UIC will travel to Marquette on Nov. 2 and Western Illinois, Nov. 8.
The regular season wraps up with a swing through Wisconsin and matches at Green Bay on Nov. 12 and Milwaukee on Oct. 13.
The top six teams in conference play will advance to the 2010 Horizon League Championship, which will take place from Thursday, Oct. 18-Sunday, Oct. 21. The regular season champion will host that event.
"Just like last season, I expect Horizon League play will be really competitive," said Schumacher-Cawley. "Each program continues to get stronger every season, so every league match is vital."
UIC features several returning players from last year's team, including seniors Jessica Dalke, Epiphany Davis, Chelsea Sloan, Casie Sullivan and Taylor Szatkowski. In addition, the Flames boast a recruiting class that was recently given Honorable Mention status from PrepVolleyball.com. UIC was the only Horizon League program to be given that designation.
"I am very excited as this senior class has worked really hard to prepare themselves for their final campaign as a UIC Flame," said Schumacher-Cawley.
