CHICAGO - The UIC volleyball team has been named a recipient of the NCAA Public Recognition Award, bestowed upon those teams that have an NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sport.
In a congratulatory letter addressed to head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley, NCAA President James Isch wrote:
"As the head coach, you play a critical role in helping your student-athletes achieve their athletic and academic goals. The academic success of your team demonstrates your commitment to student-athletes. Your team has demonstrated its commitment in the classroom and on the playing field, and they are setting an example for all students."
Schumacher-Cawley, who is in her second year as the head coach of the Flames, acknowledged the significance of the team's success, as well.
"I am proud of the team in their academic achievements because we strive to be the best on and off the court," said Schumacher-Cawley. "Excellence in competition and in the classroom is what UIC Volleyball stands for."
UIC will begin the 2010 campaign this Friday night at the Chicagoland Challenge. The Flames will take on host DePaul at 7:30 p.m. following a contest between Loyola and Northwestern.
