DEKALB, Ill. - The UIC women's tennis team opened up the abbreviated fall season in dominating fashion this weekend, claiming seven championships at the NIU Invitational.
The pairing of Mariya Kovaleva and Linda Hricistora claimed the A doubles title, defeating foes from Chicago State, Eastern Illinois and host NIUs McLaughlin and Friedlund, while Ilinca Cristescu and Janna Knoppe prevailed over Green Bay's Nelson and Bradfield for the B flight championship, winning 9-8.
In singles action, newcomers prevailed in droves as Elisa Simonetti defeated teammate Cristescu for the Black flight championship, Linda Hriestora claimed the Huskie flight and Kathleen Sharples breezed through the NIU bracket with ease in the first of three weekend tournaments the Flames will participate in this fall.
Two-time defending Horizon League Player of the Year Kovaleva made easy work of her foes in a Red bracket victory, while finally Teona Tsertsvadze flowed through the Victory E. bracket to take the final title for the Flames.
UIC will be idle until October 1 when they play host for the UIC Invitational, a two-day tournament to be held at the UIC Outdoor Courts.
