Palos Heights, Ill. - The UIC men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2010 campaign with the UIC Home Opener at Horsetail Lake on Saturday by posting wins over Horizon League rivals Green Bay and Milwaukee.
In the series of dual meets, UIC's men's team defeated the Phoenix and Panthers, as well as St. Xavier and Chicago State. The Flames captured the top three spots on the podium with Brian Denk winning the race in 20:41.1. Sam Kehoe finished second (20:51.0) and Tyler Hinckley (20:51.4) ran third.
"I'm very please with how the races went today," said UIC head coach Jim Knoedel. "The men did a great job despite running shorthanded."
UIC was without standouts Matt Morse and Roger Pinon on Saturday.
The women outran Green Bay and Milwaukee, but were bested by St. Xavier. Rosemary Gillam was the top performer for the Flames, placing third in a time of 11:53.5. Grace Millhorn (12:21.3) placed seventh in the two-mile run, while Jaime Johnson (12:24.4) was ninth.
"Rosie ran one of the best races of her college career," said Knoedel. "I'm extremely proud of her.
"I'm excited with how the team did today," said Knoedel. "We beat two conference schools that we'll see again down the line and the more teams we can get past, the better off we are."
