CHICAGO - The UIC volleyball team (14-14/7-9 Horizon) earned a first-set victory over Milwaukee to begin the match, before dropping the final three sets for a 3-1 (28-30, 25-16, 25-18, 25-19) loss Saturday inside the Flames Athletic Center in Chicago, Ill.
"I thought we played well," head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley said. "At times we played great volleyball. We need to get some work in this week to prepare for the Horizon League Tournament."
Sophomore captain MaryKate Imrie (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) logged a double-double with 37 assists and 14 digs in the Flames effort. Junior Kelsey Safranek (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) hammered down 16 kills, while chipping in eight digs.
The Flames dug an early 8-2 deficit in the first set, before the team went on a five-point run, which included two kills by freshman Sara Sternard (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Westmont) to put the UIC squad just two points behind the Panthers at 9-7.
Redshirt junior Janise Dismuke (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) gave the Flames the first tie of the set at 20. From there, the UIC team would see five lead changes. The victory was capped off with three-consecutive Flames points, including a block assist from Dismuke and Nicole Allgood (Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham) for a hard-fought 30-28 victory.
The UIC team dropped the final three sets of the match to fall 3-1 to the Milwaukee squad.
UIC returns to action Nov. 18 at the Horizon League Championship in Milwaukee, Wis.
