Final Stats
NORMAL, Ill. - In front of the largest crowd UIC has seen all year of nearly 1,400, the Flames fell to 4-2 on the season with a 77-56 loss to Illinois State on Monday night. UIC was led by senior Kiara Strickland with a career-tying 17 points as senior Jasmine Bailey chipped in 14. Redbird senior Katie Broadway piloted all scorers with a career-high 26 points on 9-of-16 shooting.
ISU entered the contest ranked No. 2 in the country in three-point field goal percentage and proved tonight that it wasn't a fluke. The Redbirds hit 8-of-16 from beyond the arc as Broadway went 5-of-8. As a team ISU shot 50.9 percent from the floor, while limiting the Flames to a season low of 28.8 percent.
Both teams began the contest playing long ball as they each hit three treys a piece, including two from junior Taylor Foulks, within the first eight and half minutes of the game. With 11:36 on the clock and the score knotted at 18-18, the two squads traded a series of buckets brining the tally to 26-26 with 4:15 remaining in the first half. The first 16 minutes saw eight ties and six lead changes.
From there, the Redbirds took control and went on a 13-0 run to end the half as the Flames hadn't connected on a field goal since the 7:29 mark. ISU owned a 37-26 advantage at the break.
The Redbirds showed no signs of slowing down, starting the second stanza on 15-4 run, bringing the score to 52-29 with 15:26 left on the clock.
ISU held strong for the remainder of the game, not allowing their lead to dip below 21 points and forced a 27-point edge on two separate occasions.
"I thought we got away from what made us successful in the first 15 minutes of the game, said head coach Regina Miller. "We basically lost our discipline offensively and weren't following our rules. We also got a little fatigued and didn't make ISU's defense work at all by forcing up quick shots."
The Flames return to action on Friday, Dec. 2 at home against Indiana State with tip set for 7 p.m.
