WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Junior Andrea Crump captured the individual titles in both the triple jump and 100-meter dash, leading the UIC men's and women's track and field teams to a combined 22 top-five finishes in the Mike Poelhein Invitational on the campus of Purdue Saturday afternoon.
Crump leaped 11.71 meters in the triple jump, out-jumping Loyola's Natalie LeFlore (11.43) b y nearly 0.3 meters. UIC's Kellie Schuh (11.31 meters) also finished third in the event. Crump followed it up by crossing the finishing line ahead of the field in the 100-meter, finishing the race in 12.49 seconds. She also finished fourth in the long jump (5.48 meters).
"Andrea really competed well, and it was a pleasant surprise," said head coach Jim Knoedel. "Rarely to you see a victory from the second heat. She also had some great performances in the jumps and in the 4x100 relay; Andrea is off to a great start to the season."
The women's team's next highest finish was a third-place tally in the high jump by Constance Sciacero, who leaped 1.60 meters. Kellie Schuh finished fourth in the pole vault (3.40 meters), while Erin Clark, Aimee Schuh and Rosemary Gillam recorded fifth-place finishes in the respective hammer throw, long jump and 5,000 meter run. Aimee Schuh also took fifth in the 100-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 15.35 seconds.
On the men's side, the Flames recorded 10 individual top-five finishes, led by a dominating effort in the triple jump. Justin Higginbotham, Andy Wall, Bret Deyo and Brandon Gale finished second-through-fifth individually. Wall also finished fourth in the high jump (1.85 meters) and 110-meter hurdles (15.06 seconds).
"Andy was great -- he set a personal best in the javelin, and posted a great early season time in the 110-meter hurdles," Knoedel said.
Anthony Hollingsworth (11.04 seconds) and Matt Kubik (11.05) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100-meter dash; while Nick Torres and Tyler Hinckley each finished fifth in the respective long jump and 5,000 meter run.
In the relays, the women's 4x100 team comprised of Katie Wallace, Aimee Schuh, Mariya Denisenko and Crump tallied a fifth-place finish (49.97 seconds); while the men's relay squad of Kubik, Cory Renner, Josh Stanner and Hollingsworth finished third in a time of 42.60 seconds. The 4x400 men's team consisting of Stanner, Ryan Blackmon, Matt Zaluckyj and Lewis Brown finished fifth (3:26.59).
The UIC men's and women's track and field teams will compete in the Chicagoland Championships next week. The women will compete on Friday (April 8) beginning at 1 p.m., while the men will race on Saturday (April 9) at 10 a.m.
