EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The UIC volleyball team dropped in a close 3-2 (25-22, 21-25, 20-25, 25-16, 15-12) outcome to host Evansville Saturday at the Carson Center in Evansville, Ind. Junior Kelsey Safranek (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) led the match in kills with 21.
UIC (5-3) dropped the first set in a 25-22 decision despite Safranek and redshirt junior captain Janise Dismuke (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) knocking down a combined 11 kills. Safranek logged a hitting percentage of .545, while Dismuke had five kills at a clip of .500. In the first set, the team managed a hitting percentage of .310, but fell just short to the Purple Aces, who hit at .341.
The Flames picked up the second and third sets to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Safranek and sophomore captain MaryKate Imrie (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) logged a service ace a piece, while redshirt sophomore Maggie Strus (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) hammered down back-to-back kills to improve the Flames lead and earn an eventual 21-25 victory.
In the third set, Safranek had six kills (.600), while Dismuke added five at a clip of .556. The Flames compiled an impressive .395 hitting percentage, compared to Evansville's .112 to propel UIC to a 20-25 win.
The Flames were unable to gain a match victory as the squad fell in the final two sets in 25-16 and 15-12 scores.
