KENOSHA, Wis.- The UIC men's and women's track & field teams recorded a combined 11 first-place finishes, including a pair of school records, in the Carthage College "Tadd Metzger Invitational" at the Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center Friday night.
On the men's side, UIC finished second, collecting 135 team points. The women's squad totaled 102.75 points, good for third-place in the field.
"We had a tremendous effort on Friday, especially from our women's team," said head track & field coach Jim Knoedel. "Ariel (Kirby), Tess (Ehrhardt) and Rebecca (Zaiter) all had a hand in three victories, and Rebecca broke the school record in the 1000-meter."
"Mariya Denisenko also broke the school record in the long jump, and we had individual wins by Sam Kehoe, Justen Garth, Matt Zaluckyj, Nate Kamm and Michael Stupkaon the men's side," Knoedel added. "Overall it was a great meet."
UIC's female freshmen trio of Ariel Kirby, Tess Ehrhardt and Rebecca Zaiterled the Flames to three-of their first-place tallies. Zaiter broke the school record in the 1,000-meter run, crossing the finishing line in 3:02.37, more than three seconds ahead of the rest of the field.
Meanwhile, Ehrhardt took home medalist honors in the 1-Mile Run, finishing in 5:16.71. The trio then competed in both the 4 x 400 meter relay, and 4,000-meter Distance Medley, both of which finished first in the field. The fourth participant in both relays was junior Jaime Johnson.
Other individual titles on the women's side included senior Kellie Schuh capturing first-place honors in the second flight of the triple jump (11.55 meters), and senior Alexandria Warner finishing first in the weight throw, with a distance of 16.80 meters. Sophomore specialist Mariya Denisenkoalso set a new school record in the long jump, finishing with a leap of 56.69 meters.
On the men's side, UIC posted five individual first-place finishes. Junior Justen Garth finished first in the 55-meter dash (6.52 seconds), while senior Matt Zaluckyj (1:57.24) took home top honors in the 800-meter run. Senior Sam Kehoe crossed the finishing line in first-place (8:41.75) in the 3,000-meter run, while senior Nate Kamm claimed the individual pole vault title, leaping 4.40 meters. Freshman sprinter Michael Stupkaalso claimed top honors in the 400-meter dash, finishing in 50.85 seconds.
Both the men's and women's teams will head to South Bend, Ind., next weekend (Feb. 3-4), to take part in the Meyo Invitational. Events get underway next Friday beginning at 2 p.m. CST.
