Women's Swimming & Diving Pulls Away From Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The UIC women's swimming & diving team (7-4-1, 3-1-1 HL) came out on top of conference-opponent Youngstown State after posting a 166-133 final Friday evening at the Beeghly Natatorium. Melanie Waszak tallied two first-place finishes, while also marking season-best times in the 200 fly and 100 fly.

"We won a hard fought competition against a much improved Youngstown State team," head coach Paul Moniak said. "Next, it's on to Cleveland State to battle one of the top teams in the Horizon League."

Of the 16 events, the Flames came away with 10 wins against the Penguins. Waszak, Emily Gniatczyk, Clair Martin, Marissa Yontz, Monica Pinkus and Andrea Longlade all contributed in tabulating top times.

Waszak marked a season best in the 200 fly and came in first with 2:06.08. She also tied a best of 57.68 previously set by Kelsey Millin in the 100 fly by taking first, while Millin came in second at 58.92.

Gniatczyk posted a personal best on the season with a first-place 24.35 in the 50 free. In the 100 free, she also took first with 52.84, while Yontz placed second with 54.29.

Martin came away with first in the 200 IM with 2:14.59, while she held two close second-place finishes, coming in at 59.59 in the 100 back and 2:08.40 in the 200 back.

Yontz finished on top in the 200 free with 1:55.43, Pinkus took first in the 100 breast with 1:05.88 and Longlade pulled away for the win in the 200 breast with 2:25.89.

The 200 medley relay team of Martin, Pinkus, Yontz and Gniatczyk tied the season-best time of 1:48.39 while coming in first place. Gniatczyk, Pinkus, Millin and Yontz came together in the 200 free relay to place first with 1:38.87.

Tomorrow, the women's squad will join the men and go head-to-head with Cleveland State in the final dual meet of the season at 11 a.m. (CT) at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.
