DAYTON, Ohio - The UIC baseball team dropped its series finale contest against Wright State on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 13-7, inside Nischwitz Stadium. The Flames held the lead on two separate occasions and junior Alex Grunenwald belted his second homerun of the season with three-run shot in the fifth inning, which gave UIC the 7-4 advantage. The Raiders went on to record nine total runs in the seventh and eighth inning, putting the game out of reach. With the loss, UIC falls to 5-11 overall and 1-2 in the Horizon League.

"We competed hard today for six innings," said head coach Mike Dee. "Once again we broke down on the mound and handed them the game."

Wright State stormed out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, notching four hits off starting UIC pitcher Charlie Weinberg. The six-foot three-inch junior lasted five frames, allowing 10 hits and five earned runs.

In the pursuing stanza, UIC captured the lead with four runs on three hits. Sophomore Jon Ryan started things off with a double to left field which was followed by sophomores Jacob McNamara and Ryan Boss reaching base on a hit pitch and a walk, respectively. With the bases juiced, Freshman Cody Dykema cracked a two-RBI single to left field, scoring McNamara and Ryan. Later in the inning, junior Alex De LaRosa posted a two-RBI single of his own, sending Dykema and Boss across the plate which gave UIC the 4-3 edge.

WSU knotted the score at 4-4 with a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Flames quickly retook the lead in the top half of the fifth on Grunenwald's three-run homer.

With UIC holding a 7-4 edge heading into the final three frames, Wright State ripped off nine straight scores over the next two innings which secured the six-run triumph.

The Flames step out of conference play this week with games at Northern Illinois on Tuesday and Bradley on Wednesday before hosting conference-foe Youngstown State for a three-game swing beginning on Friday.
