CHICAGO - Redshirt sophomore Ryan Boss nearly hit for the cycle in UIC's 8-0 series finale win over Youngstown State on Sunday afternoon at Les Miller Field. Boss needed just a single to achieve the rare feat as he notched a homer, a triple and a double. Junior pitcher Charile Weinberg earned the win, lasting seven innings, allowing just four hits and fanning six YSU batters. With the win, UIC improves to 9-12 overall and 4-2 in the Horizon League.

"I'm really proud of the way we played this weekend," said head coach Mike Dee. "We played phenomenal defense and had great pitching. I think we took a step forward this weekend."

Boss led the Flames offense by going 3-for-5 at the plate, while driving in three runs and scoring twice. His solo home run in the bottom of the first inning was his second of the series and third of the season, which leads the team. Redshirt sophomore Mike Schoolcraft and junior Tim Suminski provided quality relief pitching for UIC, throwing one inning apiece and combining for just one allowed hit. Suminski entered the contest in the ninth frame and recorded two strikeouts.

After Boss's bomb in the first gave UIC a 1-0 lead, the Flames tacked on another in the second inning. Jon Ryan started things off with a double down the right field line and eventually advanced to third on a groundout by junior Alex Grunenwald. Sophomore catcher Alex Jurich finally sent Ryan home on a hard-hit single to second base and the Flames went up, 2-0.

UIC really extended its lead in the bottom half of the third inning by scoring three runs on four hits. Freshman Cody Dykema began with a single up the middle and Boss drove him in with a double down the left field line. Boss was then sent home by redshirt junior Alex De LaRosa as he posted a two-baser into left field. With two outs in the inning, junior Joe Betcher cracked a single up the middle to score De LaRosa, the Flames' final run of the frame.

The scoring continued for UIC in the fourth inning as Jurich kicked off the stanza with a single to right field and on the next batter advanced to third on a wild pitch. Redshirt junior Ryan Shober sent Jurich across the plate on a sacrifice fly. Later in the inning, Boss ripped his triple down the right field line, scoring redshirt junior Nick Addison, giving UIC a 7-0 advantage.

The Flames added one more insurance run in the seventh inning, which was the game's final score and secured their first shutout of the season.

UIC returns to action on Tuesday as they host Big East-foe Notre Dame with first pitch set for 6 p.m. CT.
