DETROIT - Senior Melinda Macias had five hits in five at-bats in the second contest against Detroit Saturday as UIC downed the Titans, 10-2 at Buysse Ballpark in Detroit, Mich. The Titans outlasted the Flames 7-6 in the first game of the twinbill.
GAME ONE
The Flames placed a run on the board in the top of the first and second innings, followed by two runs in the third inning.
In the first, lead-off hitter, Melinda Macias singled to the left side, before Natalie Hernandez had a double to left. With runners on second and third, Coryn Schmit walked to load the bases. Jacki Fletcher then reached on a fielder's choice, while Macias was put out at home. Jenna Marsalli also reached on a fielder's choice, while earning a RBI as Hernandez scored.
The Flames again loaded the bases in the top of the second inning. Teresa Aguilar led off and was hit by a pitch, before Melissa Preish singled to centerfield. Hernandez then moved all of the runners to load the bases as Schmit reached on a fielder's choice to score Aguilar and give UIC a 2-0 lead over the Titans.
In the third inning UIC added two more runs as Fletcher began with a single up the middle, while Marsalli reached on a fielder's choice. Due to an error by the second baseman, Fletcher reached second base. Designated player, Kara Komp then doubled to centerfield to score Fletcher. Marsalli then scored off of a fly out by Aguilar.
With the Flames leading 4-0, the Titans earned one run in the bottom of the third, before adding three runs in the bottom of the fifth and one in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead.
UIC fought back and scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to gain a 6-5 lead, before Detroit answered to tie the game at 6-6. The Titans closed out the contest with a walk-off homer in the bottom of the eighth to win the game 7-6.
GAME TWO
The Flames got the bats rolling early in the contest as UIC scored two runs in the top of the first inning, followed by four in the top of the second inning.
Lead-off batter, Macias set the tone for the Flames with a homerun over the right field wall. Then, Schmit singled to left field, before Fletcher singled up the middle. Marsalli loaded the bases with a base hit to left field. With a single down the left field line, Komp scored Schmit to give the Flames a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
UIC logged six hits in the second frame, which began with four consecutive base hits. Batting in the nine spot, Preish had a single to centerfield, followed by lead-off batter, Macias, who had a single to right field. With runners on first and second, Hernandez singled to right field and collected a RBI, scoring Preish. Schmit closed out the hit-streak with a single to centerfield to score Macias and Hernandez. Marsalli then singled to right field, and moved Schmit to second base. Left-hander, Komp had a slap hit that got by the short stop for a base hit that scored Schmit, while Komp advanced to second base on the throw. With the four runs in the inning, UIC led Detroit, 6-0.
The score remained 6-0 until the bottom of the seventh inning when Detroit scored two runs.
In the top of seventh inning, with the bases loaded, Schmit hit a hard-hit ball to right field, which resulted in clearing the bases and Schmit reaching third base. Fletcher then earned a RBI as she knocked Schmit in to place the score at 10-2, UIC.
UIC returns to Buysse Ballpark Sunday complete the three-game series with Detroit for a single game that begins at 11:00 a.m. (CT).
