CHICAGO - Junior Coryn Schmit hit two homeruns to pae UIC to a 5-4 victory over Green Bay during the first game of the twinbill, before the team turned around to claim a 9-1 win Wednesday at Flames Field in Chicago, Ill.

"I am very proud of the effort of the entire team tonight," head softball coach Michelle Venturella said. "It was great to have two solid performances by Devin (Miller) and Ashley (Hewett). It was also great to see Coryn (Schmit) hit the ball so well, and come through in both games. Several people stepped up when we needed it for a great team win. Today was a good step for us, and tomorrow will bring another challenge."

With the two homeruns, Schmit now has eight on the season and leads the Flames in the category, while also leading the Flames in RBI with 35.

GAME ONE

In a 10-inning game that lasted just under three hours, UIC battled back and forth with Green Bay as the two teams played through 10 complete innings.

UIC jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Schmit notched her first homerun of the game, and seventh of the season, over the left field wall to score sophomore Natalie Hernandez, who singled to center field.

The Phoenix scored one run in the top of the fourth inning, and two more runs in the top of the seventh to take a 3-2 lead over UIC. As the Flames came up to bat in the bottom half of the seventh frame, junior Melissa Preish hit a solo homerun to center field to tie up the game, and keep UIC alive.

As the contest moved into extra innings, Green Bay scored in the top of the ninth, forcing UIC to place a run on the board to continue the game. The Flames kept battling as senior Melinda Macias came up with a RBI to score junior Teresa Aguilar, and place the score at 4-4.

Schmit then hit her second homerun of the game, and eighth of the season, to conclude the game in walk-off fashion, 5-4.

Junior Devin Miller was inside the circle for UIC, where she improved her record to 12-11. She pitched through 10 complete innings, and had 12 strikeouts for a season-total 144.

GAME TWO

UIC was an offensive power house in comparison to its opponent, Green Bay, as the Flames had 12 hits to the Phoenix four. There were four Flames members that collected multiple hits during the game.

Preish scored in the bottom of the second inning off of an RBI by sophomore Courtney Heeley, who had three RBI in the contest. UIC then scored in back-to-back-to-back innings. In the bottom of the fourth inning, junior Kara Komp scored off of Heeley's second RBI, a sacrifice ball to second base.

Two additional runs occurred in the bottom of the fifth inning. Hernandez led off the inning with a single to left field, before Schmit doubled to right field to score Hernandez. Then, senior Kelsey Sturgeon earned an RBI as she scored sophomore Jacki Fletcher off of a sacrifice fly.

It was during the sixth inning that the Flames logged five runs to retire the Phoenix due to the run rule. The game was concluded in a 9-1 decision, with five runs off of four hits in the sixth inning.

Senior Ashley Hewett pitched for UIC and the senior blanked 10 batters, allowed four hits and one run. With the victory, Hewett now possesses a 10-12 record.

UIC closes out the three-game series with Green Bay Thursday at 1:00 p.m. (CT) at Flames Field.
