NILES, Ohio - The UIC baseball team came up short in game one of a three-game series at Youngstown State on Friday afternoon by a final score of 11-3. The Flames held an early 1-0 lead after the top half of the second inning, but the Penguins scored four runs in the bottom portion of the second and led the rest of the way. With the loss, UIC falls to 16-23 on the season and 9-10 in the Horizon League.
Junior right-hander Joey Begel received the start for the Flames, lasting five innings with nine hits allowed and seven earned runs. YSU's Russ Harless was credited with the win as he gave up all six hits and just two earned runs in six innings. Over the final three frames, the Penguins bullpen held UIC hitless.
Sophomore Jon Ryan piloted UIC at the plate going 2-for-4, including a double in the fourth inning as sophomore Jacob McNamara tallied two of the team's three RBI. Youngstown State notched 14 hits on the day as five separate players recorded multiple hits.
The Flames first run in second inning came off a throwing error by the YSU shortstop which allowed UIC's Alex Jurich to safely trot home from third base.
UIC posted its two final scores in the fourth frame as Ryan began the surge with a double to right field and Joe Betcher reached on a hit pitch. The next batter, Jurich, plated Ryan on a single to left field as Betcher moved over to second. McNamara sent Betcher home on the next at bat with a single up the middle.
Saturday's game will begin at Noon CT as freshman Brian Evak will take the mound for UIC.
