Volleyball Sweeps Colgate And Bryant

HAMILTON, N.Y. - The UIC volleyball team (2-1/0-0 Horizon) swept Colgate (25-20, 26-24, 25-21) and Bryant (25-10, 25-22, 25-22) Saturday during the final matches of the Colgate Classic in Hamilton, N.Y. The Flames posted a 2-1 overall record in the tournament after dropping a hard fought five-set match to Syracuse Friday.

MATCH ONE

The Flames posted an overall .321 hitting percentage in the victory over Colgate. In the first set, the team compiled a .400 hitting percentage, including 15 kills with a mere one error. In the second and third set, UIC hit at .312 and .256, respectively.

Senior Aubrey Sniegowski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont Township) paced the Flames with 12 kills at .435, while senior Janise Dismuke (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) and sophomore Molly McCoy (St. Charles, Ill./Wheaton Academy) had nine and eight kills, respectively. Dismuke also chipped in seven blocks.

Sophomore Sara Sternard (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Westmont) hit at a .375 as she hammered down seven kills with only one error.

The Flames won the first set in a 25-20 victory, followed by 26-24 and 25-21 in the second and third sets to clinch the match.

Colgate gained its only lead of the first set on the first point. From there, the Flames continued to build on their lead, including an early three-point run (6-2). With the score at 24-20, Sniegowski finished off the match with a kill from junior MaryKate Imrie (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg), who dished out 32 assists in the victory.

MATCH TWO

The Flames picked up their second victory of the day with a 3-0 win over Bryant. UIC handled the Bulldogs in a 25-10 outcome in the first set, followed by consecutive 25-22 wins to clinch the match in three sets.

Senior Kelsey Safranek (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) led the Flames with 11 kills, while Dismuke and Sniegowski had nine apiece. UIC continued to hit well as they posted .487 and .450 hitting percentages in the first and second sets, and an overall percentage of .354 in the match.

Dismuke hit at .444 with her nine kills on only one error, while also posting five blocks, including one solo block. Imrie bested her previous 32 assists from the Colgate match with 36 against Bryant.

The Flames return to action in their home opener at the UIC Invitational against UT-Arlington Friday at 7:00 p.m. (CT).
