CHICAGO - Sophomore Sara Sternard(Clarendon Hills, Ill./Westmont) was named to the five-person all-UIC Invitational team, as the Flames closed out the tournament by dropping a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-17) decision to IPFW and a 3-1 (21-15, 25-19. 25-13, 25-19) setback versus Eastern Michigan Saturday at the Flames Athletic Center.
MATCH ONE
Sternard posted five kills in the match for a .250 hitting percentage.
The Flames began the set by winning the first three points, including back-to-back kills by senior Janise Dismuke (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) and a service ace by junior MaryKate Imrie(Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg).
With the score at 7-7, the Flames went on a five-point run that was ignited with consecutive kills by Sternard and Kelsey Safranek (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) and three-straight service aces by senior Nicole Allgood(Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham).
The Flames battled with the Mastodons until IPFW went on a 6-3 run to take the first set in a 25-19 outcome.
Friel made her collegiate debut in the second set of the match, where she logged two assists. Dismuke assisted on three-straight points for the Flames as she chipped in on a block with Safranek, followed by consecutive kills to give UIC a 15-12 lead.
The Mastodons posted two 6-2 runs to complete the match in a 25-20 victory, and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Nava her first kill of her career with the Flames during the third set. In addition to Nava's debut, the set was highlighted with back-to-back solo blocks by Sternard.
The Mastodons won the deciding set in a 25-17 outcome to clinch the match.
MATCH TWO
The Flames battled through the first set against Eastern Michigan as the Flames suffered four-point and six-point deficits early in the match. With four-point and six-point runs, UIC found its first lead since the first point of the set at 17-16.
In the six-point run, Sniegowski hammered down two kills, while also chipping in with Dismuke for two blocks to place the score at 18-16, Flames advantage.
UIC then went on to outscore Eastern Michigan 6-2, and Sternard secured the set with a service ace for a 25-21 victory.
The second set of play was played in a back-and-forth motion, which consisted of six lead changes. The Eagles were able to outscore UIC 11-3 in the final stretch of the game, which allowed Eastern Michigan to earn the win in a 25-19 decision to tie the match at 1-1.
The Flames were defeated 25-13 and 25-19 in the third and fourth sets, respectively. The Eagles captured the match in a 3-1 outcome.
The Flames return to action Saturday in the Chicago Classic, a two-day tournament at Mother McAuley High School, at Noon (CT) against Oregon State, followed by DePaul at 5:00 p.m.
