Final Stats 
CHICAGO - The UIC baseball team (17-16) held visiting Chicago State (4-24) to just two hits in a 6-0 shutout victory on Tuesday night at Les Miller Field. Senior Alex Grunenwald belted his sixth home run of the season with a solo blast in the fifth inning, finishing the game with three RBI. Senior Alex De LaRosa paced UIC at plate by going 3-for-5 with two RBI.
Sophomore pitcher Brian Evak was credited with the win, holding the Cougars hitless over three innings of work. The Flames used seven different pitchers in the contest as the staff collectively allowed just one walk and struck out eight CSU batters.
"It feels good to get a win," said head coach Mike Dee. "Our hitting was a little more consistent tonight and our pitching performed well."
UIC jumped in front early with two runs in the first inning as junior leadoff man John Coen reached base on a hit-by-pitch and then stole second to begin the frame. After junior Jacob McNamara joined him on base with a walk, redshirt junior Ryan Boss was also given a free pass to load the bags. That's when De LaRosa slapped a single to center field, plating Coen and McNamara.
The Flames wouldn't score again until the fifth inning when Grunenwald sent a charge over the right field wall to extend UIC's lead to 3-0. The Merrill, Wis., native leads the Horizon League in homers with six.
In the bottom of the eighth frame, the Flames added three insurance runs to seal the six-run triumph. Grunenwald pushed two runners across the dish with his second triple of the season as he was sent home on a RBI-single form Boss.
The Flames return to action on Wednesday at Northern Illinois with first pitch set for 3 p.m. CT.
