Baseball Experiences Road Bump at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The UIC baseball team (19-18) suffered a road defeat against Purdue (12-25) on Wednesday evening by a final score of 20-0 at Alexander Field. The Flames found themselves in a deep hole after giving up three runs in the first inning and then 15 in the second frame. UIC tightened up its defense in the final six innings by allowing just five hits and two runs. Offensive woes also plagued UIC as they recorded one extra-base hit and stranded 12 stranded.

Purdue starting pitcher Gavin Downs picked up his first win of the season as he lasted five innings, allowing just six hits and striking out five UIC batters. The Flames' staff struggled early on and witnessed eight different pitchers throughout the game.

Redshirt senior Alex Grunenwald led UIC at the plate by going 2-for-3 as John Coen, Andres Ortegano, Tyler Detmer, Ryan Shober and Carl Sugihara recorded one hit apiece.

The Flames return to action on Friday as they head to first-place Milwaukee for a three-game Horizon League series with the first pitch set for 3 p.m. CT.
