CHICAGO - Two runs in the first inning gave the UIC baseball team (19-19, 8-8 HL) an early lead over first-place Milwaukee (16-16, 9-4 HL) on Friday afternoon, but the Panthers would score eight unanswered runs to claim game one of the three-game series at Henry Aaron Field. The Flames had opportunities to score as they left 11 runners on base. Five errors also plagued UIC compared to just one for UWM.
"We had a great start from Tomas," said head coach Mike Dee. "We just could not finish as a team. We need to regroup and play for the series tomorrow."
Redshirt junior Andres Ortegano was a bright spot for UIC, hitting 4-of-5 from the plate, but was responsible for two miscues. Junior John Coen and redshirt senior Alex De LaRosa also had good days at the dish with two hits apiece.
Flames' starting pitcher Tomas Michelson lasted 6.1 innings and tied a career-high eight strikeouts. The sophomore allowed just three earned runs on eight hits as his season record moves to 5-3.
UIC took the early lead with back-to-back singles from Coen and Ortegano to begin the contest. Detmer moved the pair to second and third on a sac bunt before redshirt junior Ryan Boss came to plate. Boss lined out to centerfield, scoring Coen, and a throwing error by the centerfielder allowed Ortegano to cross the plate as well.
The Panthers scored one run in the second frame and UIC actually held the 2-1 advantage until the sixth inning. That's when UWM rattled off seven runs in the next three frames to seal the victory.
Saturday's game is set to begin at 1 p.m. CT as senior Joey Begel will take the mound for the Flames.
