CHICAGO - The UIC women's soccer team (2-10-0, 0-2-0 HL) dropped a 1-0 overtime decision against Detroit (4-5-1, 2-1-0 HL) on Saturday in the Flames' first-ever home Horizon League match. Senior Alyssa Riley netted the game-winner for the Titans at the 98:26 mark with a header off a free kick. Riley's goal was the first allowed by UIC in 220 minutes of play, dating back to the Milwaukee game on Sept. 24.
"I am very impressed with our defensive effort in these last few matches," head coach Brian Rigby said. "Tonight was a tough result, but I think we are proving we can contend within the Horizon League."
The Flames had a scoring chance in overtime when freshman Emily Wauer took a shot near the top of the box at the 95:43 mark, but the ball sailed high and to the left, just missing the top of the Titans' goal. Freshman goalie Kelly Fritz started in the net against the Titans and saved two while allowing one. Freshman Marina Manzo started in goal for Detroit and saved two.
Detroit's Alyssa Lotito served Riley the game-winning pass from 30 yards out off a free kick. UIC matched Detroit in total shots with eight, while the Titans had three attempts reach goal compared to UIC's two. Freshman Olivia Everin led for the Flames with three shots, while freshman Mackenzie Fuller and junior Flo Beshiri also earned shots for UIC.
The Flames look ahead to face Valparaiso at home as they continue Horizon League action on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at Flames Field.
