Flames Drop Series Finale to Wright State, 9-7

CHICAGO - The UIC baseball team (14-18, 9-9 HL) punched out 15 hits Saturday afternoon (April 19) but committed three costly errors in a 9-7 loss to first-place Wright State (21-16, 15-2 HL) at Curtis Granderson Stadium. UIC had the winning run at the plate in the ninth inning but Jacob McNamara flew out to right field to end the game.

Tyler Detmer was 4-for-4 and Mickey McDonald drove in a career-high three runs on two hits. McNamara, John Coen, Alex Lee and Jeff Boehm also drove in runs for the Flames. Jake Nath went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored two runs.

Jack Andersen got the start for UIC and allowed seven runs on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings. He struck out three Raiders and walked one batter.

Following a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first inning, Lee drove McDonald home with his first career triple. Boehm then brought Lee home with a RBI groundout.

Wright State evened the score at 2-2 on two hits in the top of the second inning. Nath doubled to lead off the third inning and advanced to third on a wild pitch. McDonald singled up the middle with one out to plate Nath.

Andersen's outing ended during Wright State's five-run fifth inning that included six hits and an UIC throwing error. Joe Perricone relieved Andersen and allowed three baserunners over 1 1/3 innings. Mitchell Schulewitz (3-5) was saddled with the loss after allowing two runs on two hits during the seventh and eighth innings. Jon Ryan and Alex Posey finished the game out of the bullpen.

UIC scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to narrow the WSU lead to 7-6. Detmer led off with a single and was moved to third on hits by Coen and Nath. McNamara plated Detmer on a single and McDonald drove in two runners with a single up the middle.

The Flames tied the contest in the seventh inning after Alex Jurich led off with a walk, advanced to third on Conor Philbin's single and scored on Coen's fielder's choice. UIC used three pitchers in Wright State's two-run eighth inning, which included two hits and two UIC errors.

UIC is next in action on Wednesday (April 23) when the Flames travel to West Lafayette, Ind. to play Big Ten program Purdue. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT at Alexander Field. Earlier this season (April 1), the Flames defeated the Boilermakers 18-5 in Chicago.
