Flames' Comeback Falls Short Against Chicago State

April 9, 2014

Box Score

CHICAGO - Down 6-1 to Chicago State (10-18), the UIC baseball team (12-14) stormed back to tie the game in the sixth inning but ultimately fell 8-7 Wednesday night at Curtis Granderson Stadium. UIC had the tying and winning runs on base in the ninth inning but could not bring them home.

Jacob McNamara, Jeff Boehm and Alex Jurich all had two hits and one RBI for the Flames. Tyler Detmer and Alex Lee also drove in runs while Mickey McDonald crossed the plate twice.

Joe Perricone lasted 1 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on four hits. Mike Schoolcraft relieved Perricone and allowed two runs on seven hits over 2 1/3 innings. Brian Evak allowed one run over two innings before Mitchell Schulewitz (2-4) was saddled with the loss after giving up the winning run in the top of the eighth. Schulewitz struck out four Cougars over three innings of work.

CSU scored two runs on three hits in the top of the first inning before Boehm's groundout scored McNamara in the bottom half. The Cougars knocked Perricone out of the contest with two more runs in the second inning. Schoolcraft came out of the bullpen and allowed two runs in the fourth inning as UIC trailed 6-1 entering the bottom of the fifth.

McDonald led off UIC's half of the fifth with a walk and was advanced to third on Brett Krause's single to center field. McDonald scored on Detmer's groundout and Krause came around on Lee's single to right field.

After CSU scored one run in the top half, the Flames tallied four runs on five hits in the bottom half of the sixth inning to tie the game at 7-7. Boehm doubled and scored on Jurich's single before the Flames loaded the bases. With two outs, McNamara singled and Jordan Stroschein's error in right field allowed all three runners to score.

Chicago State used a two-out rally in the eighth inning to pull ahead of the Flames 8-7. After the first two batters were retired, Julian Russell doubled and scored on Chase Matheson's single up the middle.

Boehm doubled down the right field line to lead off the ninth inning and Jurich reached on a hit by pitch. Boehm was retired at third base on John Coen's bunt attempt but the runners advanced to scoring position following a wild pitch. Jake Nath struck out swinging and McDonald grounded out to second to end the game.

UIC hits the road for the first time in three weeks for a Horizon League weekend series (April 11-13) at Oakland. The three-game series in Rochester, Mich. gets underway on Friday at 2:05 p.m. CT
