CHICAGO - The UIC baseball team (23-24, 16-12 HL) had 12 baserunners Thursday night but stranded ten of them in a 7-2 loss to Oakland (11-30, 6-16 HL). Mickey McDonald recorded two of the Flames' six singles and Tyler Detmer drove in a run.
Jacob McNamara, Alex Jurich and Jeff Boehm also tallied hits for UIC. Cody Bohanek and Conor Philbin drew a pair of walks.
UIC starter Tomas Michelson (6-4) allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out two batters. Michelson threw 101 pitches and 68 of them went for strikes.
The Flames led off the first, second and fourth innings with singles but could not advance the runner past second base. Bohanek and Philbin walked in the third and fifth innings but were also stranded.
McDonald singled to right field with one out in the sixth inning but Alex Lee struck out and Boehm grounded out. Detmer, Philbin and Bohanek walked in the seventh inning and Detmer scored on a wild pitch.
Detmer brought Lee home in the eighth inning with a single to left center. Lee had reached on an error and advanced to second on Boehm's single. Detmer ranks second on the squad with 39 runs batted in.
Mitchell Schulewitz and Alex Posey both tossed scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Mike Schoolcraft allowed three runs on four hits in the seventh inning.
The Flames continue the three-game series Friday night with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. at Curtis Granderson Stadium. UIC has already clinched the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the conference tournament, which is scheduled to start on May 21 in Mequon, Wis., at Kapco Park. The Flames are slotted to play in Game #4 of the HL tournament on Thursday (5/22) at 3 p.m., awaiting the winner of No. 3 vs. No. 6 seed.
