May 7, 2014

Box Score

CHICAGO - The UIC baseball team (22-20) had its eight-game win streak snapped Wednesday night with an 8-4 home loss to Northwestern at Curtis Granderson Stadium. The Flames and Wildcats (15-31) each had nine hits but Northwestern hit two home runs off UIC pitching.

Conor Philbin, Cody Bohanek, Tyler Detmer and Mickey McDonald collected RBIs for UIC. Alex Jurich and John Coen both had two hits while Jeff Boehm scored two runs.

Joe Perricone (2-1) received his sixth start of the season and allowed four runs over 2 1/3 innings. He walked four batters and gave up two hits.

UIC got the scoring started with two runs in the second inning. Boehm led off with a walk and advanced to third on Jurich's infield single combined with a Northwestern error. Detmer walked to load the bases and Boehm scored on Philbin's sacrifice fly. Following a strike out, Bohanek plated Jurich on a two-out single to center field.

With two outs in the eighth inning, Boehm reached on an error and advanced to second on Jurich's single. Detmer collected his 34th RBI of the season on a single up the middle that scored Boehm.

UIC added one run in the ninth when McDonald drove in Jacob McNamara with a one-out single through the right side. Alex Lee struck out and Boehm grounded out to end the game.

The Wildcats knocked Perricone out of the game with a four-run third inning. Brian Evak relieved Perricone and retired two straight batters to end the threat.

Evak lasted 2 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on five hits. All three runs came in the fifth inning that included a two-run home run by Joe Hoscheit. Mike Schoolcraft allowed two hits and a home run to Jack Mitchell over 1 2/3 innings.

Mitchell Schulewitz retired all five batters he faced and struck out two in his 1 2/3 innings out of the bullpen. Alex Posey pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

UIC continues Horizon League play on the road this weekend (May 9-11) with a series at Youngstown State. The three-game series in Youngstown, Ohio gets underway on Friday at 10 a.m. CT. The Flames swept the Penguins at home earlier this season (April 4-6).
