CHICAGO - UIC men's tennis player Mitch Granger recently sat down with Fox Chicago's Lisa Chavarria to talk about the community service program he founded called SPARK, also known as Students Performing Acts of Random Kindness. SPARK's sole mission is to feed the homeless population of Chicago using money donated through friends, family and supporters of the cause.
Joining Granger in the Fox interview is Chicago native Raymond Ferguson. Ferguson recognizes himself as one of Chicago's nearly 140,000 homeless persons. He spends every day at the corner of Randolph and State in Chicago's loop district greeting people with well wishes and friendly smiles.
Granger and Ferguson have formed a friendship over the past few months during their many interactions through SPARK in which Ferguson has received several meals packaged and provided by UIC student-athletes.
Granger began SPARK in November of 2014 with a mere eight volunteers and limited funds to purchase food. Since then SPARK has exploded by more than quadrupling their volunteer staff with the help of several viral YouTube videos.
SPARK is currently accepting donations through GoFundMe.com which has seen a dramatic increase in contributions since Granger's mission has gone public.
Aside from purchasing food for Chicago's homeless, Granger hopes to raise enough money to help his friend Ferguson get back on his feet with a permanent residence, so he no longer has to endure the harsh conditions of the city streets.
