Softball Splits Action on Day Two of TCSI

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Feb. 7, 2015

ROSEMONT, Ill. - The UIC softball team (2-2) kicked off the second day of competition at the Total Control Sports Invitational by claiming a 6-0 shutout victory against Miami (Oh) before it was edged by Butler, 3-2, in game four of the season.

"I was glad to see our pitchers work together to get the shutout today," head coach Michelle Venturella said. "Bridget (Boyle) did a great job setting the tone and Karissa (Frazier) came in and finished the game strong. Our offense did a great job of putting on pressure and scoring in multiple innings. In game two, I thought we did a good job of handling a strong offensive team. We continued to press but their defense came up with the timely plays. We are looking forward to finishing the tournament strong tomorrow against Central Michigan."

Freshman Tiana Mack-Miller had a big day, going 3-for-6 (.500) with one home run as well as collecting two RBI and scoring three runs. Freshman Taylor Cairns, juniors Laura Swan and LaRi Mitchell, and seniors Eleni Polites and Paige Peterson additionally multiple hits on the day to contribute to the Flames' total of 16.

UIC held Miami (Oh) at bay throughout a majority of its game while allowing just five hits from the Redhawks. Mitchell and Mack-Miller had two-hit performances to add to the Flames' hit total of 10, with Mitchell adding two stolen bases to bring her season count to five.

The first chance for UIC with runners in scoring position was in the third inning. With one out, Cairns doubled to left and Mitchell followed with a single to advance Cairns. Mitchell then collected her first of two stolen bases in the game, but both runners were left on.

The Flames scored what would prove to be enough in the fourth inning. Mack-Miller led off with a single and made her way to third following a wild pitch and a single from senior Erica Hampton. Two outs followed and sophomore Rachel May was walked to load the bases for pinch-hitter Dana Capocci, who singled to score two runs.

Miami (Oh) threatened in the top of the fifth as it had bases loaded with two outs, but a routine groundout finished the frame and UIC stepped to the plate. Peterson led off with a single and was on first when Mack-Miller worked with a 0-2 count and belted her first-career home run over the left field wall to put the Flames up 4-0.

The final two runs came in the sixth inning, when Cairns and Mitchell made their way around to third and second, respectively, and set up Swan with a single to center to plate both runners.

Flame thrower Bridget Boyle grabbed her first win of the season after going 4.2 innings in the circle and allowing five hits before freshman Karissa Frazier came in to hold off the Redhawks in the final 2.1 innings and secure her first-career save.

It was a back-and-forth battle between UIC and Butler with holding each other off base. The Bulldogs had nine hits against the Flames' six, contributed by six different players.

Butler broke off with the first two runs of the game in top of the third. With two outs and a runner at second, Alex Kotter, who went 3-for-3, singled to left to bring in the first run. Chelsea Norwood followed with a double to center, allowing Kotter to round the bases and score.

The Bulldogs had runners left at second and third in the fourth inning before UIC knotted the score at 2-2. Swan singled and Mack-Miller walked to begin the frame before Hampton laid down a sac bunt to move the runners. Sophomore Kaleigh Nagle hit a two-out single to center, bringing in Swan and Mack-Miller.

In the fifth, Butler loaded the bases with one out and Kristen Boros singled to score the eventual game-winning run. The Flames had an opportunity to answer in the bottom of the inning. With Peterson on second, Swan hit a ball deep to center, but it was grabbed on the run to steal a possible RBI double.

Sophomore Elaine Heflin pitched 4.1 innings with one strikeout and was then relieved by Frazier, who finished the game allowing one hit and striking out three.

The Flames will conclude the final day of the Total Control Sports Invitational on Sunday with a 2 p.m. CT matchup against Central Michigan (0-3).
