CHICAGO
- The UIC baseball team (3-8-1, 1-0 HL) won its Horizon League opener and snapped a seven-game losing skid on Friday afternoon with an 8-2 victory against Valparaiso (3-9, 0-1 HL) at Granderson Stadium. Junior pitcher Ian Lewandowski earned his first win of the season after giving up a mere six hits and two runs over eight innings of work. The Flames used a six-run fifth frame to go in front and then added a pair of scores in the seventh.

Senior Jeff Boehm went 2-for-3 with two doubles, while senior Alex Lee posted a game-high four RBI. Boehm now owns six doubles on the season which leads the team. The Flames tallied 13 total hits on the day as five separate UIC players posted multiple pokes.

Detmer continued his impressive on-base streak today which now sits at 34, the second-longest in the nation that dates back to last season.

Sophomore Cody Bohanek began UIC's fifth-inning surge with his first double of the season followed by four straight singles from his teammates. Trevor Lane recorded the first RBI off the day with a single up the middle to score Bohanek and then senior Carl Sugihara singled down the right field line to plate fresman Rob Calabrese. Senior Tyler Detmer sent Lane across the dish with a one-baser through the left side and then a single from Lee scored Detmer and Sugihara.

Valpo responded with a two-run homer from junior Daniel Delaney in the top of the sixth frame, cutting UIC's lead to 6-2.

The Flames added two scores in the bottom of the seventh inning as Lee ripped a single up the middle to plate Boehm and Detmer, cementing the 8-2 final count. Lee now has 13 RBI and 16 hits on the season.

The series continues with game two on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. CT.
