CHICAGO - Junior Trevor Lane tossed eight shutout innings against Northern Illinois on Wednesday evening at Curtis Granderson Stadium as the Flames downed NIU (11-12) by a final of 10-0. UIC (8-10-1) notched its first shutout since May 18, 2013, and improves to 5-3 at home this season. The Flames have also scored 10 or more runs in four of their last five games.
Lane (2-2) picked up his second win of the season, allowing a mere seven hits and striking out five NIU batters during eight innings of work. Redshirt junior Joe Perricone fanned two batters in the final frame.
Senior Tyler Detmer went 4-for-5 from the dish and extended his nation-leading reached-base streak to 41 games. Sophomore Mickey McDonald and senior Jeff Boehm each tallied two RBI as they hit 3-for-4 and 3-for-5 from the plate, respectively.
UIC plated its first run in the opening frame after sophomore Cody Bohanek slapped his fourth double of the season and then Boehm sent him home with a single to left center.
The Flames held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the third inning when the Flames scored three runs. Bohanek and Detmer kicked things off with back-to-back singles and then Boehm once again plated Bohanek off a double to left field. Detmer crossed home plate after McDonald posted an infield single and then Boehm eventually scored on a balk call.
Boehm now has eight doubles on the season, 26 RBI and slugging percentage of .729 all of which rank second in the Horizon League.
The Flames extended their lead to 8-0 with a four runs in the fifth frame and then made it 10-0 with lone scores in the sixth and seventh innings.
UIC will return to action this weekend at Youngstown State for a three-game series beginning on Friday at 4:30 p.m. CT.
