NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The UIC baseball team (2-7-1) scored three runs in the ninth inning against Ohio (9-4) on Sunday afternoon, but it was not enough as the Bobcats completed the three-game sweep with an 8-4 series finale victory in Nashville, Tenn. hosted by Vanderbilt.
Sophomore Cody Bohanek led the way for UIC with two hits and two RBI, while redshirt freshman David Cronin went 2-for-2 from the dish, the first two hits of his career.
After three scoreless frames it appeared that a pitcher's duel between UIC's Trevor Lane and Ohio's Evan Geist was underway. Sunday was Lane's second career start with the Flames.
Starting in the fourth inning, Ohio went on to plate seven unanswered runs to grab a 7-0 lead after six frames. The Bobcats exploded for five scores in the fifth frame as they began the stanza with four straight hits and back-to-back doubles.
Lane (0-1) exited the mound after 4.2 innings of work after giving up six earned runs and eight hits.
UIC scored its first run of the day in the bottom of the sixth after Lane, who stayed in the game as a designated-hitter, plated sophomore Ricardo Ramirez off a sac-fly to right field.
Ohio went ahead 8-1 with its final run in the top of the ninth, scoring on a fielder's choice play.
The Flames made a valiant attempt at a rally with three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Senior Tyler Detmer reached base off an error and then senior Jeff Boehm and redshirt freshman Michael Stahoviak loaded the bases on consecutive walks.
UIC suffered two quick outs on back-to-back strikeouts, but the next batter Bohanek recorded a two-RBI single to left field which cut Ohio's lead to 8-3. With runners on first and second, Cronin collected his first career RBI with a single to center field that plated Stahoviak which also cemented the 8-4 final tally.
