CHICAGO - The UIC women's tennis team (9-8, 5-1 HL) put up a fight on Sunday but fell behind Detroit (14-8, 6-1 HL) as it dropped a 4-3 decision for its first conference loss of the season.
The Titans have proven to be a problem for the Flames over the past three years, as they ended both of UIC's historic streaks of 146 conference wins and 17-consecutive conference titles.
UIC jumped out to a 1-0 lead after putting up two wins in doubles. Keti Mebuke and Oana Manole stole the show with their fourth-straight win at No. 1 against Anna Davydova and Irina Slizovskaya, 6-4. Jackie Altansarnai and Ann-Sophie Hahn then bested Viktoria Laskutova and Nino Sujashvili, 6-2, for their sixth win at No. 2.
It was a battle in singles for both teams as three matches went to three sets and four sets went to the tiebreaker. Detroit evened the score as Davydova defeated Manole, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3, but Altansarnai followed with her fourth-consecutive straight-set victory at No. 2 against Valeryia Kulikovskaya, 6-1, 6-0.
The Titans then took the next two matches with Bianca Zuzu coming up short in three sets after taking the first against Laskutova, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 5 and Melika LeBlanc falling to Nynke Van Der Goot, 6-2, 7-6 (5), at No. 6.
Mebuke endured a lengthy match at No. 1 but was able to come out on the winning end for her 10th victory of the season and fourth straight versus Sasha Nionova, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 7-5. The Flames were unable to pull away with the final win despite Hahn's efforts at No. 4 after going to three sets with Slizovskaya, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8).
UIC will hit the road for its final two matches of the regular season. The Flames will take on Youngstown State on Saturday in Youngstown, Ohio, at 4 p.m. CT and Cleveland State on Sunday in Cleveland, Ohio, at 10 a.m.
