PEORIA, Ill. - While enduring 20 mile-per-hour winds, the UIC softball team (19-17) favored the long ball by going yard four times, but it was not enough to pass by Bradley (16-30) as it dropped a 6-5 decision on Tuesday at Laura Bradley Park.
Four-of-five runs for the Flames were scored off home runs due to production by Tiana Mack-Miller, Laura Swan and Kaleigh Nagle, which marked the most home runs in a game since hitting four at Detroit on April 6, 2013. Swan had two home runs in the game for the first time in her career.
"It was great to see us hit the ball today, but we needed to do a better job of having more runners on base when we get the big hits," head coach Michelle Venturella said. "We gave them too many extra opportunities which they capitalized on. I liked the fight we had in the seventh, but just came up a little short."
UIC outhit the Braves, 11-7, and had Nagle and Swan lead all players with three hits apiece. Despite their efforts, the Flames left a total of 12 runners on base, including bases loaded in the seventh.
Bridget Boyle registered her 15th start of the year and went a combined 2.2 innings, giving up four hits and earning four-of-five runs. Elaine Heflin entered to pitch 3.1 frames while striking out five and allowing three hits with one earned run.
Mack-Miller put UIC on the board in the first inning as she lined the ball to the top of the left field fence and it bounced over for her fourth home run of the season. Bradley went up 2-1 in the bottom half as two scored on a play with a single and Flames error.
Swan went yard to lead off the second and tie the game with her first home run of the year and then Nagle gave the Flames the 3-2 advantage with a leadoff solo blast, her second on the season, in the third.
The Braves went ahead on a three-run third as Maria Schroeder hit a two-run shot out to right center and the third tally walked in with the bases loaded. Another run was plated in the fourth on a sacrifice fly executed by Caitlyn McCarron.
Swan secured her first career multi-home run game with another solo long ball in the fifth.
UIC loaded up the bases in the seventh after LaRi Mitchell singled, Savannah Soppet reached on a Bradley error and Erica Hampton singled. Dana Capocci then came through with a single to score one, but three remained on as the last outs followed.
The Flames will get back to Horizon League play this weekend as they head out to Dayton, Ohio, for a three-game series against Wright State. Game one is set for 4 p.m. CT on Friday, with a doubleheader at noon on Saturday.
