April 7, 2015

BOX SCORE

CHICAGO
-- The UIC baseball team (14-11-1) earned a 5-2 victory at Chicago State (7-23) on Tuesday evening behind a strong performance on the mound from sophomore Connor Ryan. Ryan gave up a mere two runs and six hits during eight innings of work to pick up his first win as a member of the Flames. Ryan also recorded four strikeouts allowed just one free pass.

Senior Jeff Boehm totaled three RBI in the midweek affair as redshirt junior Conor Philbin drove in a pair of runs. Boehm upped his season RBI total to 32, which leads the team and ranks second in the Horizon League.

Chicago State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after plating a lone run in the opening frame.

The score remained unchanged until the top of the sixth inning when senior Carl Sugihara was sent home after Boehm reached base on a bases loaded walk.

In the eighth frame, UIC recorded four hits and took hold of the lead after scoring four runs with two outs on the scoreboard. After sophomore Cody Bohanek reached base on a walk, senior Tyler Detmer ripped a single to push Bohanek to second. Detmer and Bohanek advanced one bag after a passed ball and then Boehm plated both runners off a single to center field. Sophomore Mickey McDonald followed that up with a single to right field and then Philbin drove in both players with his third triple of the season.

The Cougars scored once more in the bottom of the eighth inning to cement the final 5-2 tally.

Senior Ryan Hinchley came in for the final out to record his fourth save of the season, which ranks third among Horizon League pitchers.

The Flames return to action this weekend for a three-game series at Milwaukee, starting on Friday at 3 p.m. CT. UIC sits atop in the league standings with a record of 9-3, while the Panthers rank fourth with a mark of 5-6.
