Fort Wayne, Ind. - The UIC volleyball team (0-1) opened the 2015 season with a 3-1 loss (23-25, 25-19, 18-25, 16-25) to Eastern Illinois (1-0) Friday afternoon in the IPFW Invitational.
UIC led 15-11 in the first set after a kill by Kara Johnson but Eastern Illinois tallied 14 of the next 23 points to take control and a 1-0 lead. With the second set tied at 14-14 the Flames pulled away from EIU, outscoring them 11-5 down the stretch to tie the match at 1-1.
Junior Alyssa Ehrhardt, a transfer from Toledo, recorded six kills and a team-high three service aces in the set. For the match, she posted 13 kills on 32 match attempts in her UIC debut.
Senior Stephenee Yancy led UIC with 18 kills on a match-high 34 attempts. The Horizon League preseason Player of the Year selection also added four blocks, while redshirt sophomore Nicole Johnson tallied 42 assists and 14 digs.
UIC returns to action at the IPFW Invitational on Saturday (Aug. 29) with two matches. The Flames will battle host IPFW at noon CT before wrapping up the invitational against Central Michigan at 3:30 pm CT.
